The west coast's longest beach — diving, sunsets and village life
Flic en Flac has the longest public beach on the west coast — a five-kilometre stretch of pale sand that catches the sun all day and turns spectacular at dusk, when the sky over the lagoon shifts through tangerine and violet. It's also the island's top diving destination: the underwater topography here, including caves, drop-offs and the famous La Cathédrale dive site, attracts divers from across the Indian Ocean.
Unlike some of Mauritius's more resort-heavy spots, Flic en Flac retains a genuine residential character. Local families, long-term expats and working Mauritians all live side by side along its back streets. The main road through town has supermarkets, cafes, dive shops, restaurants and pharmacies — everything for day-to-day living without leaving the village.
Property in Flic en Flac ranges from modest beach-facing apartments to large private villas set back from the coast. Values are generally strong and have held well — the combination of beach access, amenities and a real local community makes this one of the west coast's most consistently popular residential choices.

Yes — the beach is safe and shallow in the lagoon, there's a strong community feel, and daily amenities are all within walking distance. It's arguably better suited to family life than Grand Baie's more tourist-oriented atmosphere.
The underwater terrain off Flic en Flac includes dramatic walls, caves and the wreck of the Kei Sei 113. Visibility is consistently excellent on the west coast. La Cathédrale — a series of cathedral-like basalt columns — is regarded as one of the Indian Ocean's most impressive dive sites.
Flic en Flac tends to command premium prices for beachfront and sea-view properties due to the quality of the beach. Apartments typically start from Rs 5–7M; villas with beach access from Rs 20M and upwards. The market is active and properties rarely sit unsold for long.
